Objectives
To offer education and training opportunities to researchers and administrators in order to meet the demand for such professionals in the market in Brazil and abroad;
To offer education and training opportunities to prospective professors to meet the demand from undergraduate programs in Agricultural Sciences in Brazil and abroad;
To develop new technologies for increasingly efficient agricultural production with a view to improving the quality of life of Brazilians while promoting sustainability and environmental preservation.
MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the Graduate Program in Plant Science is to foster further scientific knowledge about crops, soils and the environment and apply such knowledge to resolve actual agriculture-related problems and to protect Brazil’s renewable natural resources.
History
The Federal University of Viçosa (UFV) was the first university in Brazil to offer a Graduate Program in Agricultural Sciences. The Master’s Degree in Plant Science has been offered since 1961 and the Doctoral Degree in Plant Science, since 1972.
The Master’s and Doctoral Degrees of the Graduate Program in Plant Science is composed of departments in the following fields: Animal Biology, General Biology, Plant Biology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Education, Rural Economics, Agricultural Engineering, Forestry Engineering, Plant Pathology, Plant Science, Computer Science, Letters and Arts, Microbiology, Chemistry, Soils, Animal Science. Students are affiliated with the Department of Plant Science, under supervision of an Advising Committee.
In the first evaluations by CAPES (Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel), our Program received Grade A. After the evaluation system of CAPES was changed, we received the following grades:
- Period: 1998 – 2000 – Grade 7
- Period: 2001 – 2003 – Grade 6
- Period: 2004 – 2006 – Grade 5
- Period: 2007 – 2009 – Grade 5
- Period: 2010 – 2012 – Grade 6
